It’s one of the most unique waterfalls in Eastern Pennsylvania, but not as well known as other waterfalls in the region. Today on Nature Break, we visit the spectacular Shohola Falls.
If you’re a waterfall lover in the Pocono Mountains, you probably know all about popular destinations like Bushkill Falls, Dingmans Falls and Raymondskill Falls. Here’s another you should add to your list of waterfalls to visit: Shohola Falls, which is easy to access and features a multi-tier structure that creates beautiful cascades that can be viewed on several levels.
Shohola Falls is located just off Route 6 in the Shohola Recreation area. You follow a short trail from the parking lot on Brooks Road to the falls. The falls are fed by Shohola Creek, which flows into Shohola Lake and exits through a dam just above the falls.
Shohola is a Lenni Lenape Native America word meaning “place of peace.” And that’s exactly what you find as you come down the path to the viewing area for the upper tier of the waterfall, where the water drops over and around large rock ledges into a series of shallow pools. The waterfall’s width and layered structure create a powerful yet graceful flow, making it both an impressive and calming sight, and a great spot for a Nature Break. There’s smaller set of falls on the left of the overlook point, and a wider channel to the right, each with series of drops.
There’s a path that leads down to the lower tier of the falls, but be aware that the path can be tricky and slippery, including a large step and a stretch where the path slopes toward the water. Wear good hiking shoes and proceed with care. At the bottom, there’s a rocky ledge that provides stunning views of the full breadth of Shohola Falls, which is about 50 feet high and 75 feet wide across all the tiers.
